Networking with a purpose - ideas from Joe Lavelle - Yesterday, I shared a review of Act As If It Were Impossible to Fail. (You can read it HERE.) Today, I want to share more from Joe Lavelles book! Joe talks about Networking with a purpose. This is so important. I hear from people all of the time who insist that they have been doing EVERYTHING for their job hunt including networking. However, upon further inquiry, it is clear that they could be doing a lot more. Joe offers this advice, which I believe is right on target. (Points are his, commentary my own): Make meeting others a priority. So often, networking is something careerists only think about when it is time to look for a job. It should be something you do all of the time, no matter what. Joe suggests setting goals of how many people to contact in a certain period of time. It is key to focus on your networking, as we all know there are so many other priorities that take our time. Network with empathy. This is a great way to describe how to network. Joe reminds readers to focus on making networking a two-way street. What do YOU offer? This is not all about taking be sure you are also giving. Find a location. You can meet people in all types of groups and programs. Join groups both professional and personal, as you never know when or where you will meet someone who is a great match. Ask questions. A lot of times, job seekers focus on how to ANSWER questions. It is just as important to know what questions to ask! I always tell my clients to be sure to know what they WANT to know when meeting a great networking contact. It sounds obvious, but often, people go into meetings (or informational interviews) without a clear goal. Have a goal and great questions to ask. You wont be sorry. Listen for Clues. Good listening is so important. Ive written about this and cannot say it enough. Take notes. Personally, I write down everything I want to remember. You dont want to forget who you met, what they told you, if you should follow upThere is so much to remember! Dont miss an opportunity because something slipped your mind. It’s not something that’s hidden or obscured in tax code, but it can be easy to overlook, especially when you’re filling out and filing your taxes on your own. One reason it’s easy to miss is how it’s categorized, in addition to the information that may be required. Before pursuing these deductions, there are a few things you’ll want to consider. Keep records of everything. This point cannot be emphasized enough. You need to keep every receipt over the course of your job hunt. The biggest reason for this has due to the “2% limit.” This means if your overall job hunt expenses fall below 2% of your income (specifically “adjusted gross income”) you will not qualify for the deductions. It’s important to be aware of all the expenses you accrue during this time, which we’ll look in greater detail below. You must be actively seeking employment. If you encountered a dry spell during your job search and took time off from said search, the IRS may disqualify you from receiving the deductions. They term it as a “substantial break” from whenever your previous job ended to when you begin your search. That’s the extent of the IRS’s definition and it’s vague. It’s something you’ll have to use your best judgment on if there are gaps in your search. You cannot change careers. Well, you can, of course, but if you change or plan to change careers and enter a different field, you won’t be able to qualify for the deductions. Again, it’s one of those things that’s left ambiguous by the IRS. They don’t explicitly define what sets apart one field from another, but again, you’ll have to use your best judgment. If it’s blatantly obvious (such as moving from a “sales consultant” to an “app developer”) chances are you will get denied, but if it seems reasonable (such as moving from a “copywriter” to “editor”) you’re safe. No first-timers. Never had a job before? No deductions. It’s as simple as that. In order to qualify, you must be moving from one job to another. These include “employment and outplacement agency” fees. These can include job placement services, employment or workforce counseling, and related agencies â€" basically any service you were charged for during your job search that offered assistance in that search. However, if at any point you are reimbursed for these fees by a current or previous employer, you are required to report it the next year. Résumé Any money you spent on creating, printing, or mailing your résumé is tax deductible. It doesn’t matter if you printed out one résumé and mailed it or 200. What does matter is that you keep record of your résumé expenses. If you create and print of a few résumés from your home computer, you might not qualify. In this caseâ€"and if you want to qualify for this deduction you may want to use a professional service as well as purchasing postage at a post office so you have complete a complete record. Travel If looking for a new job requires you to accumulate some mileage, you may qualify for this deduction. Most Employees Optimistic About Career Growth Opportunities A University of Phoenix survey has found that 89 percent of American workers say they have opportunities to grow their careers, despite the current weak economic conditions. Of the survey respondents who were not full-time students, 41 percent said they expect to return to school in the future, and 64 percent of these foresee doing so within the next two years. Of employed respondents, 54 percent plan to return to school. There is a skills gap in America, says Dr. Bill Pepicello, president of University of Phoenix. Employers have jobs available, but many companies are having a difficult time finding workers with the right skills to fill those positions.Just under half of respondents said that are taking or would like to take an ansprechbar class to develop their professional skills and grow their careers. Nearly three-quarters of responde nts 25 to 34 years old are most likely to participate in online courses followed by 63 percent of respondents ages 18 to 24. Older workers are also very interested in online learning with 58 percent of 35 to 44 year olds, 46 percent of 45 to 54 year olds, and 21 percent of 55 years and older expect to enroll in an online course.Most respondents with a bachelors degree (78 percent) said education has given them an advantage during the hiring process while 41 percent of respondents without a bachelors degree said so. About 60 percent of respondents not currently enrolled in school full time said returning to school would be important when considering a career change. Most respondents (58 percent) also said that additional schooling would lead to better pay and 43 percent said it would allow them to grow their careers.
