4 tips for achieving peak leadership fitness

4 tips for achieving peak leadership fitness4 tips for achieving peak leadership fitnessYou should be doing something to develop your leadership capabilities at least weekly, and I can tell you how. When it comes to leadership development, fruchtwein leaders are faced with two challenges. They are either too busy with other priorities or, given the overcrowded leadership landscape, they dont know where to start to find high-quality leadership development. As a result, leaders either ignore their development altogether, take a transactional, check-the-box approach doing an activity or two peryearto develop themselves, or they invest their time in the wrong activities. You simply cannot expect results with that approach, and leadership is too important to miss the mark. Here are two important realities. First, leadership development does not need to be overly time consuming or expensive to be effective. Second, opportunities for low-cost, high-impact leadership development are all around . You just need to know where to look and how to make the most of existing activities.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSo on to the big question. How.You may have heard the recommendation for physical fitness that before you begin any fitness routine, you should consult your physician. Your leadership fitness is no different. Before you begin any leadership development endeavor, you need an accurate assessment of how you are showing up as a leader in order to know what you should work on.Tip No. 1Complete a good, reliable leadership 360 assessmentand get the one-hour (or so) feedback and coaching, if that is an option. For the good ones, it is usually offered. The results and coaching will help you focus in on your strengths and areas for improvement. Ultimately, they will help you develop your game plan and ensure you make the most of your time and efforts.Tip No. 2Over time an d with practice, develop your ability to self-assess your leadership skills. It is not a substitute for a formal assessment which you should complete every 12-18 months. However, try giving yourself a grade on general leadership or specific leadership skills such as giving an employee feedback or presenting to the executive team, or a number of other regular leadership responsibilities. The grade is less important than your rationale for the grade.Although there are limitations with self-assessment data, as you become more accurate, it will allow you to refine your skills in the moment rather than waiting a year or more for your next formal assessment. For example, if for several weeks you find yourself giving yourself anything other than an A in an important aspect of leadership such as employee feedback, refocus your efforts on what is needed to elevate your performance in that area. With feedback in hand, you should hone your game plan. Identify the activities you can incorporate i nto your regular routine.Tip No. 3Incorporate ways to elevate your leadership game at least weekly.Like any important endeavor, you must put in the effort if you want optimal results. Think about the development the same way you would think about your physical fitness. You need to build your core and maintain flexibility.Build your core by knowing all aspects of your business, understanding the competitive landscape, and honing your technical and leadership expertise through trade publications and podcasts. There are a wide variety of activities you can pursue to maintain your flexibility such as having a mentor, teaching others,Tip No. 4.Pause, reflect, and re-energize.You need time to process information. Leaders today face increasing demands, and that is showing no signs of declining. If you continue to run your engines on high, you risk burnout. Even the most elite athletes in the world understand the importance of recovery time. It is part of their routine. If you want to be an elite leader and if you want learning to stick, you need to do the same. Learning works through a combination of action, feedback, and reflection. Leaders have no shortage of action. However, leaders Ive worked with face a shortage when it comes to feedback and reflection. Feedback allows us to calibrate a new point of view against a currently held one, and reflection allows us to make sense of the amount of information coming at us.This needs to be self-driven. Build in formal, structured time to unplug, and use that time to reflect and re-energize. When reflecting, think about what worked well for a recent activity, what could be improved, and how you would approach similar activities in the future. When you incorporate leadership development into your regular routine - at least weekly - you are working toward your peak leadership fitness. How to Run a Cost-Benefit Analysis

How to Run a Cost-Benefit AnalysisHow to Run a Cost-Benefit AnalysisA cost-benefit analysis is a key decision-making tool that helps determine whether a planned action or expenditure is literally worth the price. The analysis can be used to help decide almost any course of action, but its most common use is to decide whether to proceed with a major expenditure. Since its based on adding positive factors and subtracting negative ones to get a net result, it is also known as running the numbers. The Basics A cost-benefit analysis finds, quantifies, and adds all the positive factors involved in a proposed course of action. These are the benefits. Then all the negatives, or costs, are identified, quantified, and subtracted. The difference between the two indicates whether the planned action is advisable. The real trick to doing a cost-benefit analysis well is making sure you include all the costs and benefits and properly quantify them. Should we hire an additional ausverkaufperson o r assign overtime, or will we be better off putting our free cash flow into securities or investing in additional capital equipment? Both of these questions can be answered by doing a proper cost-benefit analysis. First Stab at a Cost-Benefit Analysis Say you are a production manager and you are proposing the purchase of a $1 million stamping machine to increase output. Before you can present the proposal to the vice president, you need some facts to untersttzungsangebot your suggestion. You need to do a cost-benefit analysis. First, you list the benefits. The machine will produce 100 more units per hour. The machine will replace three workers currently stamping by hand. The units will be of higher quality because they will be more uniform. You calculate the selling price of the 100 additional units per hour multiplied by the number of production hours per month. Add another two percent for the units that arent rejected because of the higher quality of the machine output. Then a dd the monthly salaries of the three workers. Thats a pretty good total benefit. Then there are the costs. The machine costs $1 million and it will consume electricity. Thats about it. You calculate the monthly cost of the machine by dividing the purchase price by 12 months per year and divide that by the 10 years the machine should last. The manufacturers specs tell you what the power consumption of the machine is and you can get power cost numbers from accounting. You figure the cost of electricity to run the machine and add the purchase cost to get a total cost figure. You subtract your total cost figure from your total benefit value and your analysis shows a healthy profit. Youre ready to present your analysis to the vice president, right? Wrong. Youve got the right idea, but you left out a lot of detail. A Better Example Take another look at the benefits first. Dont use the selling price of the units to calculate the value. The sales price of any item includes many addition al factors that will throw off your analysis if you include them, not the least of which is aprofit margin. Instead, get the activity-based value of the units from accounting and use that number. You added the value of the increased quality by factoring in the average reject rate, but you may want to reduce that a little because even a machine wont always be perfect. Finally, when calculating the value of replacing three employees, be sure to add overhead costs and benefits costs in addition to their salaries. Accounting is your source for the exact number of the companys fully burdened labor rates. You may have overlooked other details. For instance, you may be able to buy feedstock for the machine in large rolls instead of the individual sheets needed when the work is done by hand. This should lower the cost of material, another benefit. Now reconsider the costs. In addition to its purchase price and any taxes you will have to pay on it, you must add the cost of interest on the pu rchase. Even if the company buys the machine outright, you will have to include a sum in the lost interest it would have earned if the money had not been spent. Check with finance to find out the amortization period. The machine may last ten years but the company may not keep it on the books that long. It may amortize the purchase over as little as four years if it is considered capital equipment. If the cost of the machine is not enough to qualify as capital, the full cost will be expensed in one year. Adjust the monthly purchase cost of the machine to reflect these issues. There may mucksmuschenstill be some details you overlooked. More Costs The devil is in the details. In this case, here are some of the overlooked costs Floor space Will the machine fit in the same space currently occupied by the three workers?Installation What will it cost to remove the manual stampers and install the new machine? Will you have to cut a hole in a wall to get it in or will it fit through the door? Will you need rollers or machinists with special skills to install it?Operator? Somebody has to operate the machine. Does this person need special training? What will the operators salary, includingoverhead, cost?Environment Will the new machine be so noisy that you have to build soundproofing around it? Will it increase the companys insurance premiums? An Accurate Conclusion Once you have collected all the positive and negative factors and have quantified them you can put them together into an accurate cost-benefit analysis. Some people like to add up all the positive factors, then add up all the negative factors, and find the difference between the two. Others prefer to make a running list that combines both factors. That makes it easier for you or anyone reviewing your work to see that you haveincludedall the factors on both sides of the issues. For the example above, the cost-benefitanalysis might look something like this Cost-Benefit Analysis Purchase of New Stamping Machine(Costs shown are per month and amortized over four years) Purchase of Machine .................... -$20,000includes interest and taxesInstallation of Machine ..................... -3,125including screens removal of existing stampersIncreased Revenue .......................... 27,520??netvalue of additional 100 units per hour, 1 shift/day, 5 days/weekQuality Increase Revenue ..................... 358calculated at 75% of current reject rateReduced material costs ...................... 1,128purchase of bulk supply reduces cost by $0.82 per hundredReduced Labor Costs ....................... 18,5853 operators salary plus labor o/h New Operator ................................. -8,321salary plus overhead. Includes trainingUtilities ............................................ -250power consumptionincreasefora newmachineInsurance ......................................... -180premiums increaseSquare footage ...................................... 0no additional floor space is requir ed Net Savings per Month ........................... $15,715 Yourcost-benefitanalysis clearly shows the purchase of the stamping machine is justified. The machine will save your company more than $15,000 per month, almost $190,000 a year. This is just one example of how you can use acost-benefitanalysis to determine the advisability of a course of action and then support it with facts.

How a Government Shutdown Will Negatively Affect Federal Job Seekers

How a Government Shutdown Will Negatively Affect Federal Job Seekers How a Government Shutdown Will Negatively Affect Federal Job Seekers How a Government Shutdown Will Negatively Affect Federal Job Seekers Since 800,000 federal employees are probably now receiving their furlough notice instructions today, this will include human resources specialists and hiring managers. Its time to think about how the shutdown will affect federal hiring and federal job search for thousands of jobseekers. Remembering the furloughs of 1995 and 1996, heres what happened with federal job hiring due to the furlough and the lack of a government budget. Heres whats already happening with todays hiring due to a potential furlough and the Continuing Resolution that continues today. CURRENT APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED FOR USAJOBS ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE NOW AND WILL BE FURTHER STALLED: For thousands of active federal jobseekers who currently have applications submitted on USAJOBS, their applications will be further stalled for weeks and months if the human resources specialists are furloughed. The federal hiring process is long and complex, even without a furlough. The furlough will be very difficult for human resources specialists and managers who are trying to hire for new positions. CURRENT POSITIONS THAT ARE POSTED ON USAJOBS WILL BE CANCELED: Many current vacancy announcements will be cancelled, due to the time of the deadline of the position closing, the lack of time to review the applications and manage the hiring process. If the HR Specialists are furloughed, they cannot handle the new applications efficiently or at all. The positions will eventually be re-posted, but it will be a couple of months from now, in order to catch up with hiring activities that are in progress at the time of the furlough. Many jobseekers who have applications in process will check their application status and find that the position is cancelled. This is happening now. CURRENT FEDERAL JOBSEEKERS ARE WAITING FOR WHATS NEXT: Thousands of current federal jobseekers are waiting for responses to their active applications. The HR specialists have already notified jobseekers that they are Best Qualified or Referred to a Supervisor, but thats it. Activities have stalled due to lack of budget. The positions may be cancelled. This is very discouraging for jobseekers who are waiting for responses and who need a job to pay for their mortgages and their bills. FEW JOBS POSTED ON USAJOBS: Currently the number of active positions posted on www.usajobs.gov is very light. Many agencies have frozen all job postings or hiring, due to the lack of budget and uncertainty of the budget for next year for hiring new employees. Today there are 1117 jobs available in Washington, DC open to All US Citizens. There are 2238 positions open to Status jobseekers. The Status applicants are current federal employees, veterans and persons who can take advantage of special hiring programs (some spouses, individuals with disabilities). These positions could get cancelled if there is a furlough. SLOW RECOVERY OF FEDERAL HIRING: When the FY12 Budget is finally passed the vacancy announcements will be posted, and the hiring will go back to normal. But the process will be slower, due to the time needed to catch up on the thousands of jobs that the government typically hires. With Federal Hiring Reform of 2011, the HR specialists were really speeding up with the hiring process. But now if furlough happens, they will be backed up with applications, announcements and processes. LESS INDIVIDUALS HIRED IN 2011: The government hired approximately 309,000 new positions in 2009, the latest full-year statistic according to Office of Personnel Management. So, for 2011, if the government was on track to hire about 300,000, they may have trouble doing this with the available funds until the end of the Fiscal Year, Sept. 2011. LOSS OF JOB SEARCH MORALE: With the job market being uncertain already, unemployment at just under 9%, Americans need permanent, temporary or term government jobs to return to normalcy in America. The federal hiring process is already complex, long, especially with possible security clearances. This slow budget process, threat of furlough is dramatically affecting the morale of jobseekers who arent seeing timely responses to their applications. BIG PROBLEMS FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AFFECTED BY BRAC: Thousands of federal employees are seeking new positions due to their agency BRAC programs. The furlough will cause major job search and relocation problems for federal employees and managers who are continuing to manage changing organizational missions, relocate, and maintain a daily working morale through difficult organization and program mergers and relocations. The employees affected by BRAC may be furloughed, and this will affect their agency relocation plans, as well as job search efforts. A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AND FURLOUGH WILL HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECTIVE ON THE JOB RECOVERY IN AMERICA. A government shutdown and furloughs of government workers, which includes hiring managers and human resources specialists, will hurt the job market and the unemployment rates of America. This will NOT be a positive step toward recovery and jobs for Americans. The government needs to stay in business and get back to business with a working budget today!

This female tech CEO says women need more male mentors

This female tech CEO says women need more male mentors This female tech CEO says women need more male mentors Though 2018 has been a significant year of encouraging women to support women Brit + Co CEO Brit Morin wants to remind you that you should not shy away from men when it comes to choosing a mentor. Morin is all about women as her staff at Brit + Co is over 70% female and her digital media company serves a female-strong customer base. She also recently hosted a talk on cryptocurrency (Decrypting Crypto) because she was frustrated that more women weren’t interested in the field. but she wants women to try to find male mentors too. With the current climate, it seems that there is a hesitation by both sexes to work together in this capacity. According to  a recent study by Lean In â€" Sheryl Sandberg’s organization that empowers women â€" 45% of  male  managers are now uncomfortable  mentoring  junior-level female employees. They also found that  women are 54% less likely to have a sponsor and 24% less likely to get advice from senior leaders. As Sallie Krawcheck recently said, more me n still hold those powerful positions. If you are at a large company there is a likely chance that upper management talent you need to connect with is a man. Studies have shown that when women have an advocate, their career is more likely to go to the next level. Mentorship is absolutely necessary when you are climbing the career ladder. On the importance of male mentorsMorin told Ladders, “The changes for women over the last couple of years have been incredible. I’m so proud to be part of a generation of women that supports each other and has been making major breakthroughs in the workplace. But I think as these changes happen we should be mindful to include - not exclude - men into the conversation. There are so many guys out there who want to encourage and support women, and we need to tap into those resources too! Equality won’t be achieved by a men-versus-women dynamic, it will be achieved when gender is no longer a factor.”On starting a business at 25As for whether it is a good time or not to be a female entrepreneur, Morin says “absolutely.” According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2016 United States Report from  Babson College entrepreneurship rates rose for women by one percentage point but remained stagnant for men. “Now more than ever there are more funds, programs, and networking groups aimed at supporting women. Gender equality is top of mind and female entrepreneurs should embrace it.”Though she does admit that starting a company, at age 25, is one of the most challenges things ever. “I think the most difficult thing was starting. Literally. I had to build up the courage to leave a dream job at Google before I even knew the type of company I wanted to start. Beyond that, once I decided on the mission and the business plan, I had to get comfortable knowing that I was going to put my name on it, raise millions of dollars of venture capital, and be forced to meet with executives at giant corporations. All of those th ings are incredibly intimidating to someone in their 20s! But I just kept one foot in front of the other and kept people near me that believed in me, and over time, I learned to believe in myself as well.”Clearly, she got over the initial hurdle as in only six years she has raised over $42 million and Brit + Co touts a community of over 175 million people. The company also hosts an annual festival,  Re:Make that brings in women from all over the countries to participate in offline classes and courses and attend panels with notable speakers.

4 ways successful women stay energized - without coffee

4 ways successful women stay energized - without coffee 4 ways successful women stay energized - without coffee For many women, there are times when it feels like having a  coffee  cup permanently attached to one hand is the only way to make it through the day. Some of the world’s most  successful  women have lauded caffeine as their saving grace- Oprah, Katie Couric and even Ariana Grande are among coffee’s biggest fans- and studies have shown that coffee has myriad  benefits, from helping people live longer to protecting brain health.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Yet others find caffeinated beverages to be too intense, making them overly wired or anxious, and even causing insomnia if consumed too late in the day. Even those who can tolerate caffeine may want to dial their consumption back occasionally. But for those inevitable days when a pick-me-up is required, what’s a busy, on-the-go woman to do?Here are 4 surprising - and simple - ways that successful women across var ious industries stay energized  without  coffee.1. Getting in exercise“My go-to energy boost is exercise. Not only does my regular practice give me energy, but when I can’t focus or feel like taking a nap, I will do something physical. Sometimes it’s a walk, sometimes it’s yoga. Occasionally, I will simply start doing squats or pushups! It is a great way to get the energy flowing and to wake up.” - Andrea Travillian, lifestyle transformation coach,  Aspirify.“The best thing to boost my energy is exercise. I can easily feel my energy levels drop if I’m not consistent with my  exercise routine. I also  sleep better, which makes me feel more energized throughout the day. Sometimes, it can be hard to find the  motivation  to get moving, but what I love about exercising is that I always feel better afterward - both physically and mentally.” - Lauren Herring, CEO,  IMPACT Group.“While I do love my Starbucks, I get the most energy after a quick workout first thing in t he morning. I’ll do spinning at home or hit up the Pilates studio to stretch and practice mindfulness. Exercising allows me to boost my endorphins and clear my head. I head into work in a great mood and fully energized every day thanks to early AM exercise!” - Deborah Sweeney, CEO,  MyCorporation.com.2. Staying hydrated“First thing in the morning, I start my day with a cup of hot water and lemon. Why I love this as a way to wake me up is that it not only gets the digestive tract up and working - our guts are a main driver for our energy and mood - but also the brightness and tartness of the flavor of the citrus wakes up the senses.” - Allison Tibbs, certified personal trainer and healthy lifestyle coach,  Allison Tibbs Wellness.“The mid-afternoon ‘slump’ usually happens if I’ve not had enough water. I try for 80 ounces of water daily. And if I feel sleepy in the afternoon, I usually feel better if I drink 1-2 bottles of water.”  - Lisa Hugh, MSHS RD LDN, regi stered dietitian food sensitivity expert,  Southern Maryland Dietitian.3. Listening to upbeat music“Music increases my energy levels entirely. I compile specific playlists according to the tasks I do each day, and listen to them for a quick energy boost both in the morning and when I reach mid-afternoon slump.” - Katie Derrick, senior content writer for  Africa Travel.“If I am putting in a 12-hour day in my office, I put my favorite music on and I am absolutely energized.” - Vanessa Valiente, personal stylist and creator of  V-Style.“Turning up the music for five minutes and dancing in place makes me smile, energizes my body and immediately shifts my mood. I also use this method when I need an extra boost of  inspiration  in a moment’s notice.” - Adamaris Mendoza,  licensed psychotherapist, coach, speaker and CEO of Mendoza-Carlyle Group.4. Hacking daily habits“Stepping away from whatever I’m doing is often better than coffee. I call it ‘changing the channel. ’ Sometimes we think we need caffeine, but really we’re just  bored, tired or burned out on an activity. Human beings need breaks and unique stimulation. When I feel fatigued, often I just need to change the channel on my day and find a new show. Just like with streaming, the old show - the activity I was working on - will be there waiting when I’m ready to tackle it again. This keeps me excited and accomplishing more.” -  Faleena Hopkins, movie director, and romance novelist.“Having never been a coffee drinker, I turn to peppermint essential oil for a daily boost of energy. It works well for me because it’s so convenient, inexpensive and versatile. Just one drop is all you need! I love the uplifting aroma; it’s fresh, clean and invigorating. I am on the go a lot and if I feel myself starting to drag, all I have to do is reach in my purse, grab the bottle, open it up and take a few whiffs and I am good to go for a couple of hours. Sometimes I will put a drop on a co tton ball and place in my car vent - it’s great for staying awake on long drives. If working from my home office, I will place a few drops in a diffuser or rub a drop on the back of my wrists or neck to keep my energy and focus up.” - Jill Lebofsky, health coach, Midlife Mojo.Whether you’re a coffee fanatic simply looking to change up your routine or someone who has sworn off caffeine entirely, these four simple alternatives will have you feeling energized in no time. Dealing with Gossips and other Unsavory Attributes of Office Politics

Dealing with Gossips and other Unsavory Attributes of Office Politics Dealing with Gossips and other Unsavory Attributes of Office Politics The office rumor mill can be both a place of blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the proverbial water cooler can be a convenient place to assimilate the unwritten rules of an organization and to get a taste of the political atmosphere among employees. In fact, it’s usually a wise move to stay in the loop, but the important thing is to remain neutral. Don’t spread unsubstantiated rumors about the organization or individual employees. Once gossip turns personal, walk away, or at least don’t participate. Like office politics in general, favoritism is generally present in some form. Even if unintended, some managers make decisions based on personal perceptions of an employee’s personality, physical characteristics, philosophy, or other non-performance related aspects. While this behavior is not uncommon, it is also important not to immediately assume the stance of victim. Approach the perceived offending manager and alert him or her to your desire to take on additional responsibility. If you are being overlooked, it may simply be because your manager is waiting for those with initiative to step up and ask. Working alongside so-called “toxic” co-workers is a virtually inevitable eventuality at some point during a career. These people turn the professional into the personal and purposely seek to undermine your efforts out of spite, jealousy, or inexplicable dislike. The most straightforward manner to deal with this problem is to approach the person and directly ask about the offending actions. Don’t be necessarily accusatory but list the behaviors as matters of fact and avoid becoming emotional. Let him or her understand how you perceive such behavior and how it affects your ability to work. Allow the person to explain his or her side of the story. This tact not only opens up the possibility for better understanding, but also lets the problem worker know that you are paying attention and won’t simply sit and take the abuse. If the direct approach is undesirable, you can seek to document her behavior, citing real events that support your claims of misbehavior. Be sure to explain how his or her actions are affecting your performance. Once you’ve completed a factual and comprehensive list, bring it to the attention of your manager in a professional manner. Don’t use the opportunity to complain but to inform your boss of the situation. Though situations and environments vary greatly, no matter how you choose to address problems of office politics, you can avoid being pulled into the mire by remaining as objective and diplomatic as possible.

A low carb diet has a link to a higher mortality rate

A low carb diet has a link to a higher mortality rate A low carb diet has a link to a higher mortality rate Weight loss experts have been in a bitter wrangle with carbs for some time. Because carbohydrates are converted into sugar so easily, they objectively slacken the process of burning fat. But a healthy diet does not live and die by how quickly it makes you thin out. There are plenty of other factors that determine the merits of any given regiment-a detailed study published by the journal  Lancet,  offers a grim confirmation.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!A call for a balanced dietWholly cutting out food groups is dangerous enough if you’re not careful about supplanting the important vitamins and nutrients with the right foods.  The study reports that those that derived less than 40% of their calorie intake from carbohydrates were more likely to die early. The authors tracked half a million subjects and observed their diets (15,400 U.S adults and 432,000 adults from various countries around the world.) The data concluded a strong link between diets that have restrictive carb precursors to high mortality rates. This, when coupled with previous studies, indicates low carb diets to trigger over-eating habits, social withdrawal and to generally deprive subscribers of essential nutrients.Lead researcher, Sara Seidelmann, M.D., Ph.D, at Brigham and Women’s hospital suggests a diet of whole grains, legumes, nuts and vegetables on the topic of longevity.  There are numerous benefits with  The Mediterranean diet (which falls neatly into Seidelmann’s dietary recommendation). It should also be noted that that Lancet’s study also warned about leaning on carbs for calorie intake in excess. Subjects that got more than 70% of their calories from carbohydrates were just as likely to kick the bucket as those that got far too few.A lot of studies on the ever-updating dietary do’s and don’ts are by their nature sensational. Lanet’s study is not labeling the Ke ito diet a death sentence, nor it is saying carbs are magical immortality hacks. The study is one of many, that urges us to consider a balanced diet.Diets that implement weight loss by means of eradicating entire foods groups tend to be otherwise unhealthy and provisional. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Crushed by negative feedback Heres the first step to take

Crushed by negative feedback Here’s the first step to take Crushed by negative feedback Here’s the first step to take Nothing kills enthusiasm quite like negative feedback. It can come from friends or from failure, and many success stories die young because people don’t know how to handle it.Consider this example. You wake up an hour earlier every morning for a month and use the time to write your first short story. You push past the writer’s block, get your thoughts on paper, and edit away all the mistakes you can find. Finally, you’re ready to reveal your masterpiece, so you share a copy with your friend, a book editor. The next day, your friend calls. You’re tingling with anticipation, preparing for the praise that’s surely on its way. Instead, you’re dealt a crushing blow. “This isn’t very good. It’s bad really.”What do you do next? Many people would find a new dream. They gave writing their best shot, right? They did the work, poured themselves into the story. It just wasn’t good enough. They just weren’t good enough. While this reaction is common, it’s also absurd. Who in their right mind would expect their first attempt at fiction to impress a professional editor? When was your first try at anything a success? To maintain your enthusiasm in the face of negative feedback, you must first distinguish between your performance and your potential.Bad performances say very little about your potential. Usually, all they say is you need more practice. On the surface, this is obvious. Walking, talking, reading, driving a car - these are all learned skills. And isn’t the point of school to help you improve at subjects such as math, English, science, and history? But when it comes to our big meaningful goals, the ones we long to achieve, we often forget about the empowering effect of practice. The truth is everyone is naturally bad at everything, and in the pursuit of big goals, your current level of skill will be quickly proven insufficient. So if you worry you might not be skilled enough, relax. You aren’t skilled enough. No one is naturally. And that’s ok ay. You have the power to improve. The question isn’t “What are you good at?”It’s “What do you want to be good at?”This is a modified excerpt from QuitterProof: The 5 Beliefs of Highly Successful People.Want to go deeper?Do you have big goals you long to achieve? The biggest threat to your success is simply giving up.Become a finisher with my short book  QuitterProof: The 5 Beliefs of Highly Successful People.Download your free copy right here.Kyle Young  is helping creative people achieve big goals that matter.

5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... Fast

5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... Fast 5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... Fast Here are 5 free resources that you can use to establish or extend your online brand quickly and economically.By Kirsten Dixson and William ArrudaIf you haven’t figured out that you are being Googled in your job search just as frequently as you are Googling your business contacts, then it is time to enter the world of modern career management. Whether you want to or not, you must develop and maintain some kind of professional online profile and recognize that people are forming opinions about you based on what they find after typing your name into a search engine.Your own approach to online reputation management will be dependent on your career goals and personal comfort level with becoming visible online. Ideally, everyone would invest in a customized online portal for his or her personal brand (see examples at kirstendixson.com/portfolio.html ). When you have your own blog or website designed, you have total control over how you present yourself. However, if you have limited time or funds, you may be wondering what you can do to establish or extend your online brand quickly and economically. Here are five free resources (some also have paid services):1. www.Naymz.com.Think of Naymz as the 411 to your online identity. Not only can you create a profile, but you can also point people to all the other online content that you want them to see. This includes your other social media profiles (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), websites, articles and relevant links. You can upgrade your account to have Naymz buy your name in the paid search results so that you get guaranteed first page placement on the leading search engines. A paid listing can be especially helpful if you have a common name, digital dirt or are impatient to show up in the natural listings.2. www.BusinessCard2.com. BusinessCard2 is a virtual business card that is designed to show up in your search results. In addition to a downloadable vCard with contact information, you can include a bio, reco mmendations and attachments such as a resume, presentations, articles and photos.3. www.LinkedIn.com.LinkedIn is a must for every business professional, and it’s not just a networking tool. Create your profile at LinkedIn, and make it public. Chances are that you already have a LinkedIn profile, but you haven’t gotten it ready for public consumption. LinkedIn has good “Google juice,” so your public profile will typically rank high in the results when someone searches for your name. (If you have a common name, be sure to include qualifiers as keywords in your profiles. When people type your name into the search box and they get millions of results, they will begin to narrow down their search by the name of your latest employer or MBA program, your specialty, job title or location.) You can control what elements appear on the public Internet versus the content that only gets displayed to your LinkedIn contacts. Write a keyword-rich, easy-to-digest profile that showcases your v alue to your target audience and request endorsements from contacts that support your claims. The best way to get endorsements from people is to go ahead and endorse them. LinkedIn will prompt them to return the favor so you don’t have to. Recruiters value LinkedIn endorsements because you cannot edit them (but you can decide not to use them). Also keep in mind that the size of your network will display as part of your public profile and judgments may be made about having too many or too few connections. The right quantity for you is purely subjective, but know that the intention of LinkedIn is to connect with only those you actually know and would recommend to others in your network.4. www.VisualCV.com.VisualCV takes having your resume online to the next level by allowing you to back up your achievements with proof of your performance. Think of it as an online, multimedia executive portfolio that is template-like in design (your site looks like all the other VisualCVs). You can u pload or link to relevant content that supports your claims and also control who sees what.5. www.Alltop.com.If you’ve read my book or any of my previous articles, you know that I strongly advocate publishing articles or posting thoughtful blog comments related to your area of expertise. Searching Alltop will help you find the websites and blogs that would be effective in reaching your target audience. To avoid possible confusion and more work later, don’t start using any of these online identity management resources before you take the important first steps of discovering and articulating your personal brand. Ask yourself, what is my unique promise of value or value proposition, and how can I differentiate myself from others who are vying for the same opportunities? Write one compelling social networking bio that you copy and paste consistently across all of your online profiles. To make a great first impression, you will also want to get a professional headshot since people are often meeting you online before they meet you in person.Join William Arruda, known as The Personal Branding Guru, and Kirsten Dixson, recognized as the authority on online identity for career success, for a strategy session. The coauthors of the careers bestseller, Career Distinction: Stand Out by Building Your Brand, are partnering up again to give you real, actionable advice on how to enhance your search strategy.
